Ata Rangi Craigmore Chardonnay 2018

Founded in 1980 by winemaker Clive Paton, Ata Rangi is one of the pioneering wineries in the Martinborough region of Wairarapa, located at the southern tip of the North Island. The winery’s name, meaning “new beginning” in Maori, reflects Paton’s vision for creating wines that showcase the purity and distinctive qualities of New Zealand’s natural environment.

From its inception, Ata Rangi sought to produce wines that express the terroir of its estate vineyards. While initially focused on Pinot Noir, which quickly became a hallmark of the region, Ata Rangi soon recognized the potential of Chardonnay in Martinborough’s cool climate, leading to the creation of the Craighall Chardonnay.

Craighall Chardonnay, is from prized blocks of low-yielding Mendoza clone vines. The oldest, now over 30 years of age, are situated directly opposite the Ata Rangi home block in the heart of the deep, free-draining gravels that make up the Martinborough Terrace

The grapes are hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed, ensuring a gentle extraction of juice. After pressing, the wine undergoes fermentation in French oak barrels, which imparts a subtle oak influence and helps develop the wine’s texture. Importantly, the wine is allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation, which softens the natural acidity and contributes to a creamier mouthfeel. The wine is then aged in oak for around 10 months with regular stirring of the lees.

The aromatics are very clean and precise with fresh ripe white peach, florals of jasmine blended with a delicate spice note. The palate is complex, with great weight and precision, with a lingering finish which is a hallmark of our Craighall Chardonnay. You’ll love the unforced feel of this wine with no overt oak or fermentation characters.

The wine’s crisp acidity and texture make it an excellent match for lobster, scallops, or grilled white fish. It also pairs wonderfully with dishes like salmon and seafood risotto, where the wine can cut through the richness of the dish while complementing the delicate flavors of the seafood.
