Ideally situated at the eastern extremity of the St Emilion region on the range of low hills between the Dordogne and Isle rivers, the appellation “Francs Côtes de Bordeaux” is a small and exclusive appellation within the Bordeaux ones (hardly 500 hectares) but, interestingly, it has the highest average altitude. The wines having naturally a certain fullness and longevity inherited from their terroir, Château Franc-Cardinal has chosen to use natural and traditional winemaking techniques with a limited ageing in oak to give a discreet wood flavor in order to show all its finesse and elegance. According to the organic rules, the Vineyard is farmed organically with natural fertilizers and no herbicides nor pesticides.
The vineyards of Château Franc-Cardinal are situated on a mix of clay and limestone soils, typical of Bordeaux’s Right Bank. These soils, coupled with the estate’s microclimate, provide an ideal environment for growing Merlot (70%), which is the dominant grape variety in the blend, along with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc (24%) and Malbec (6%). The limestone soil, in particular, contributes to the wine’s mineral character, while the clay helps retain moisture, ensuring the vines can thrive even in dry conditions
“In this ripe, balanced wine, black fruits, acidity and the core structure all harmonise. Sophie Holzberg makes this elegant wine for aging”. 91/100 – Wine Enthusiast
Attractive ruby colour with brilliant carmine tints. Fruit and spice come together beautifully in this expressive, straightforward bouquet. The complimentary aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry are enveloped in fine toasty notes. With a lovely fruity structure, respected by the ageing, this straightforward, tightly grained wine is solidly constructed, though not excessively so. It’s tannins still have time to develop a certain patina. The fruit (blackcurrant, wild blackberry, periwinkle) expresses itself generously on the mid-palate. The finish is invigorating, long and finely roasted
This wine can complement a wide range of dishes, particularly those with rich flavors and textures. It pairs beautifully with classic Bordeaux fare, such as lamb or beef dishes, but can also be enjoyed with more refined meals like duck breast with a cherry reduction or a hearty mushroom risotto. For cheese lovers, it makes a wonderful companion to aged cheeses, particularly Comté or a sharp Cheddar, which balance out the wine’s fruit and tannins.
