The Valle de Itata, located in the southern part of Chile’s extensive wine-producing regions, has a rich winemaking history that dates back to the 16th century. Spanish conquistadors introduced grapevines here, making it one of the oldest wine regions in Chile. For generations, Itata has been home to small-scale, family-owned vineyards cultivating traditional grape varieties like País, Cinsault, and Moscatel.
However, for much of the 20th century, Itata was overshadowed by the more commercially driven regions like Maipo and Colchagua. The wines of Itata, particularly those made from the País grape, were largely considered rustic and were often overlooked in favour of more polished, internationally styled wines. But this is changing, thanks to a new generation of winemakers who see the potential in these ancient vines and the unique terroir of the region.
CoPa País stands for Compañía de Productores de País, a collective that focuses on producing natural wines from the País grape. This grape, also known as Mission in California, has a storied history but was long relegated to the production of bulk wine or basic table wine. In recent years, however, País has found new life in the hands of innovative winemakers who appreciate its resilience, its affinity with the Itata terroir, and its ability to produce wines with a distinct sense of place.
The wines typically have a fresh, lively acidity that makes them incredibly food friendly. They are often described as having a rustic elegance, with a balance of fruit and earthiness that is both approachable and intriguing.
On the nose, aromas of red berries, dried herbs, and a touch of smoke or spice. On the palate, light to medium in body, with flavours of bright red fruits like cherries and raspberries, coupled with a minerality that reflects the granitic soils of Itata. The finish is often clean and refreshing, making CoPa País a versatile wine that pairs well with a variety of dishes especially Mediterranean dishes, oily fish or chargrilled vegetable dishes.
