The story of G.H. Mumm begins in 1827 when three German brothers—Jacobus, Gottlieb, and Philipp Mumm—established the House of Mumm in Reims, the heart of France’s Champagne region. With a family background in viticulture, the brothers quickly recognized the potential of the Champagne terroir and set out to produce high-quality sparkling wine. The house’s commitment to quality and innovation has been its guiding principle ever since.
G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge was introduced in 1876, named after the distinctive red sash (cordon rouge) that adorns the bottle. This red sash was inspired by the French Legion of Honour, the country’s highest civilian award, symbolizing the house’s dedication to excellence.
One of the defining characteristics of Cordon Rouge is its meticulous blend. Composed predominantly of Pinot Noir, with smaller proportions of Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, Cordon Rouge embodies the unique qualities of these grape varieties. Pinot Noir provides structure and power, Chardonnay adds elegance and freshness, and Pinot Meunier contributes a fruit-forward character, creating a balanced and harmonious champagne. As Cordon Rouge is a non-vintage champagne, meaning it is crafted from a blend of wines from different years to maintain its signature profile year after year.
On the nose, it offers an enticing bouquet of fresh fruits, such as white peach, apricot, and tropical notes, along with hints of vanilla and caramel from extended aging on the lees.
The palate is well-balanced, showcasing a fine acidity that complements the fruitiness. The richness of the Pinot Noir gives depth and complexity, while the Chardonnay provides a crisp and refreshing finish.
Cordon Rouge is versatile, pairing well with a variety of dishes, from seafood and poultry to creamy cheeses and light desserts, making it an ideal choice for any occasion.
