Iona Sauvignon Blanc

Iona’s Sauvignon Blanc, produced in South Africa’s Elgin Valley, is celebrated for its crisp, refreshing style and unique expression of the cool-climate terroir. Founded in 1997 by Andrew Gunn, Iona is a pioneering winery in Elgin, one of South Africa’s coolest wine regions, which is influenced by the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. This coastal influence creates a long growing season, enabling the grapes to develop complex flavours while retaining bright acidity, which is essential for a refined, elegant Sauvignon Blanc.

Elgin Valley, located in the Western Cape, is distinct for its moderate climate, largely shaped by its high altitude and surrounding mountain ranges. The vineyards at Iona sit at around 420 meters above sea level, benefitting from cooling breezes and misty mornings that protect the grapes from intense heat. The soil composition, which includes elements of sandstone and clay, further enhances the wine’s minerality, producing a Sauvignon Blanc that is both textured and expressive.

Iona is known for its commitment to environmentally responsible farming practices. The winery employs sustainable vineyard management and minimal intervention in the cellar, aiming to produce wines that reflect the purity of the fruit and the characteristics of the Elgin terroir.

Beautiful purity of limes and ripe gooseberry, with tropical, floral and fine herbal notes, ruby grapefruit and white pear drop on the finish. This is cool climate Sauvignon Blanc – vibrant, mineral, elegant, balanced and delicate, with a long, layered and complex finish.

This refreshing acidity and elegant mouthfeel make it a versatile wine, suitable for pairing with seafood, salads, and a range of lighter fare.
