Martin Wassmer Markgräflerland Spätburgunder

When it comes to German wines, Riesling often steals the spotlight, but there’s another grape variety that deserves our attention – Spätburgunder, also known as Pinot Noir. While Germany may not be the first country that comes to mind when thinking of Pinot Noir, it’s been quietly producing exceptional examples of this varietal, and one such standout is the Martin Wassmer Markgräflerland Spätburgunder 2020.  Located in the picturesque region of Markgräflerland in the southwestern corner of Germany, Martin Wassmer Winery has been a family affair for generations. The Wassmer family’s winemaking roots date back to the 16th century, and their deep knowledge and experience in the region’s terroir shine through in their wines.

Markgräflerland benefits from a unique microclimate and geological diversity, providing an ideal environment for Pinot Noir cultivation. Situated between the Black Forest and the Rhine River, the region enjoys a mild and sunny climate, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The combination of warm days and cool nights helps retain the grape’s natural acidity, contributing to the wine’s balance and complexity.  The vineyards’ soil composition is diverse, comprising limestone, loam, and volcanic elements. This terroir imparts distinct mineral nuances and a sense of place to the wines, adding to their charm and authenticity.

This wine displays a brilliant ruby red colour in the glass, enticing with its vibrancy. On the nose, it exudes a bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, and subtle floral notes, complemented by hints of spice and earthiness.  The palate is equally impressive, boasting a harmonious blend of ripe fruit and well-integrated oak.  Silky tannins and refreshing acidity give the wine a beautiful structure, making it enjoyable in its youth but also suggesting excellent aging potential. The finish is long and lingering, leaving a delicate aftertaste of red fruits and a touch of smoke.

This pairs well with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and medium body make it a perfect match for roasted poultry, grilled salmon, or mushroom-based dishes. For cheese lovers, try it with a selection of soft, creamy cheeses, which will complement the wine’s fruitiness.
