Ontañón Contrebia Tempranillo Blanco

Tempranillo Blanco was discovered in 1988, when a grower in Rioja Baja noticed a single vine among his red Tempranillo vines that produced white grapes. This genetic mutation, which occurred naturally, was isolated and propagated, leading to the recognition of Tempranillo Blanco as a distinct variety. Although it shares genetic roots with its red counterpart, Tempranillo Blanco exhibits characteristics entirely its own, offering a fresh and novel expression of the Tempranillo lineage.

The vineyards where Ontañón Contrebia Tempranillo Blanco is grown, are located in the high-altitude areas of Rioja Baja, where the climate is a blend of Mediterranean and continental influences. The soils here are composed of clay and limestone, providing excellent drainage and imparting a distinctive minerality to the wines. This unique terroir, combined with the careful cultivation of the Tempranillo Blanco vines, results in a wine that is both expressive of its environment and true to its varietal character.

The grapes are sourced from vineyards at around 600m altitude and are harvested in early October – picked in the early morning and taken immediately to the winery. There they are slowly pressed to extract the must, and the seeds are separated from the must to maintain optimal aromas and flavours during the fermentation process. This occurs over a period of 14 days at controlled temperature. Following fermentation, the juice spends time on lees.

On the nose, it offers a bouquet of citrus fruits, green apples, and white flowers, with subtle hints of tropical fruit and a touch of minerality.

On the palate, the wine is crisp and refreshing, with a well-balanced acidity that highlights its flavors of lemon, pear, and melon. The aging on lees contributes to a creamy texture and a slight nuttiness, rounding out the wine’s profile. The finish is clean and lingering, with a hint of salinity that invites another sip.

This is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and fresh fruit, make it an excellent match for seafood, particularly grilled fish, shellfish, and sushi. It also pairs well with light pasta dishes, salads, and creamy cheeses.
