In the realm of Spanish red wines, dominated by illustrious names such as Tempranillo and Garnacha, a lesser known yet equally captivating varietal is making waves: Prieto Picudo Tinto. Originating from the León region in northwestern Spain, Prieto Picudo is gaining recognition for its distinctive character and vibrant personality.
The name, “Prieto” meaning dark, and “Picudo” referring to its pointed shape, aptly describes the grape’s physical appearance. Historically, it was primarily used in local wines and for blending, but recent efforts by dedicated winemakers have brought this grape into the spotlight as a varietal wine in its own right.
The region’s continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters, combined with the chalky and clay-limestone soils, creates optimal conditions for cultivating this grape. The high-altitude vineyards, some of which sit at over 800 meters above sea level, contribute to the grape’s high acidity and intense flavours.
On the nose, it presents an aromatic profile rich in red and black fruits such as cherries, strawberries, and blackberries, accompanied by floral notes of violets and subtle hints of spices and herbs.
The palate offers a balanced combination of ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and well-integrated tannins, resulting in a wine that is both robust and elegant. The finish is long and persistent.
Its robust structure and vibrant acidity make it a perfect companion for grilled meats, particularly lamb and beef, as well as game dishes such as venison and wild boar. It also pairs well with hearty stews, aged cheeses, and even spicy dishes, as its fruit-forward profile balances the heat.
