Tapanappa is the continuation of the 40-year mission of pioneering winemaker Brian Croser and his family to make world-class wines from the most “Distinguished Sites” in South Australia.
The name “Tapanappa” is inspired by the 550-million-year-old geological formation that underlies the Fleurieu Peninsula where we have our newest vineyard, Foggy Hill. The word Tapanappa is derived from the local aboriginal language, implying “sticking to the path”.
With a next generation of family closely involved, Brian continues his passion to achieve the finest expression of his choice of noble varieties in their best suited terroirs, no matter what each vintage brings.
The Tiers Vineyard is particularly renowned for its ability to produce high-quality Chardonnay. The combination of its cool climate, granite soils, and exposure to the elements creates a terroir that imparts distinctive minerality and freshness to the grapes. The vines in the Tiers Vineyard are carefully managed to ensure low yields, allowing for the production of highly concentrated fruit with exceptional flavor intensity.
The nose is complex and alluring, with a mix of fresh citrus fruits—lemon zest, grapefruit, and green apple, intertwined with more subtle notes of white flowers, almond meal, and a touch of vanilla bean. There is also a delicate hint of mineral character, showcasing the vineyard’s granite-rich soils.
On the palate, the Tapanappa Chardonnay 2018 offers a harmonious blend of citrus and stone fruit flavours. The wine is bright and lively, with the freshness of lime and apple balanced by the richness of nectarine and peach. The mouthfeel is round and textured, thanks to a careful malolactic fermentation and extended lees aging, which imparts a creamy, smooth texture without overpowering the freshness. The wine is also perfectly balanced, with a vibrant acidity that lifts the flavours and provides a crisp, refreshing finish.
The finish is long and elegant, with lingering flavors of citrus and a hint of toasted oak, providing a sense of both freshness and complexity. The subtle minerality and well-integrated oak influence give the wine an extra layer of depth, making it a truly sophisticated and memorable expression of Adelaide Hills Chardonnay.
Try pairing the Tapanappa Chardonnay with roast chicken or duck with a creamy sauce. The wine’s texture and acidity work well with the richness of poultry, balancing the flavours and adding an extra layer of complexity to the dish.
