Olaszrizling, known in other parts of Europe as Welschriesling, is one of Hungary’s most widely planted and beloved white grape varieties. Despite its name, which translates to “Italian Riesling,” the grape is not related to the German Riesling but has a distinct identity of its own. Olaszrizling is known for its versatility, capable of producing everything from light, crisp wines to more complex and full-bodied expressions, depending on the terroir and winemaking approach.
In the Balaton region, the grape thrives in the volcanic soils and under the moderating influence of Lake Balaton, Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake. The combination of the lake’s reflective light, the warm microclimate, and mineral-rich soils imparts a unique character to the wines, often marked by vibrant acidity, citrus and stone fruit flavors, and a distinctive mineral finish.
Zelna Winery, located on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, is a relatively young but rapidly growing winery that has gained a reputation for its dedication to sustainable practices and high-quality wines. The winery was founded by two young winemakers, Zoltán and Dóra, who share a deep respect for the environment and the region’s winemaking traditions. Their approach combines modern techniques with a commitment to preserving the natural beauty and health of their vineyards.
The grapes are harvested by hand to ensure that only the highest quality fruit is used. After a gentle pressing, the juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. This approach preserves the wine’s fresh fruit flavours and aromatic profile.
The nose is greeted with aromas of green apple, lemon zest, and white peach, complemented by floral notes of acacia and a subtle hint of wet stone.
On the palate, the wine is crisp and lively, with a well-balanced acidity that highlights citrus, apricot, and a touch of almond. The minerality from the limestone soils is evident, adding depth and complexity to the wine. The finish is long and refreshing.
This pairs beautifully with grilled fish, shellfish, and salads, as well as lighter pasta dishes and Hungarian specialties like chicken paprikash or lángos. The wine’s subtle mineral notes also complement soft cheeses and vegetarian dishes.
