Zelna Zweigelt

Hungary’s Lake Balaton region is widely celebrated for its fresh, crisp white wines, but it’s also home to some remarkable reds. Among these is the Zelna Zweigelt, a wine that offers a bold yet balanced expression of this Austrian-origin grape, made with care and precision by the up-and-coming Zelna Winery. Known for their commitment to quality and sustainability, Zelna is quickly gaining recognition for their unique approach to winemaking, and their Zweigelt is a testament to the potential of red wines in the Balaton region.

In the Balaton region, the grape thrives in the volcanic soils and under the moderating influence of Lake Balaton, Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake. The combination of the lake’s reflective light, the warm microclimate, and mineral-rich soils imparts a unique character to the wines.  The Zweigelt grape benefits from long, warm summers and the cooling influence of the lake. These conditions allow the grapes to develop full ripeness while maintaining the acidity that is crucial for producing well-structured, age-worthy wines.

The grapes are hand-harvested and after fermentation, the wine is aged in a combination of stainless-steel tanks and oak barrels. This approach allows the wine to develop structure and complexity while preserving its bright fruit characteristics.

The use of oak is carefully balanced to add subtle spice and a smooth texture without overwhelming the natural flavours of the grape. The result is a wine that is both approachable in its youth and capable of aging gracefully over several years.

On the nose, it offers an inviting bouquet of ripe red cherries, blackberries, and plums, complemented by subtle notes of spice, such as black pepper and clove, from its time in oak. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with smooth tannins and a lively acidity that balances its ripe fruit. The dark fruit notes are layered with hints of chocolate, vanilla, and a touch of earthiness, creating a complex and satisfying profile. The finish is long and lingering, with a pleasant mix of fruit and spice.

This pairs nicely with pizza, pasta with tomato-based sauces, and a variety of cheeses, from aged cheddar to creamy brie.
